In January 2016 Writers for Recovery published its first book One Imagined Word at a Time. In WFR’s first publication forty writers who participated in workshops across Vermont share powerful truths about addiction, recovery, and the healing power of love and forgiveness. Once you’ve read this volume of powerful writing you’ll never think the same way about addiction again.
“I made a promise to go outside my comfort zone and write about my experiences. It was then that I found out that by giving away my story I released its hold over me.” – Stan Worthley, participant in Writers for Recovery
WHO WE ARE: Writers for Recovery is a series of writing workshops focused on stories of addiction and recovery. Participants write about their personal stories of struggle, perseverance, moments of doubt and inspiration and the slow but steady work of renewal and healing from addiction. Workshops include creative writing, poetry, and non- fiction.
Writers for Recovery was established by Kingdom County Productions in 2013 as part of Bess O’Brien’s documentary film The Hungry Heart.
Workshops are led by award-winning Vermont writer Gary Miller and produced by filmmaker Bess O’Brien from Kingdom County Productions. Workshops run an hour and half and consist of a series of writing prompts, feedback, and guest appearances by established VT writers. At the end of each ten week workshop there is a public reading of the writer’s work.
OUR MISSION: The disease of addiction affects millions of men, women, and children across America, destroying lives, devastating communities, and tearing families apart. By providing writing workshops across Vermont, Writers for Recovery is helping people fight back and giving voice to those people who need to tell their stories and heal from their past.
HOW TO BOOK A WORKSHOP OR PARTICIPATE: Writers for Recovery workshops have been held in Recovery Centers, Correctional Facilities, Treatment Centers and other organizations that work with folks who are recovering from addiction. In addition, we o er training workshops and special conference sessions for participants.
